Seanfhocail Gaeilge Collection

The Seanfhocail (shan-uck-ul) are among Ireland's oldest treasures of spoken tradition. Passed from generation to generation, these proverbs capture the wit, wisdom and values of Irish life, often drawing inspiration from nature, family and the changing seasons.
These Irish proverb photographic heritage prints are presented in Seanċló, Ireland's traditional script. Alongside the familiar alphabet, you may notice distinctive letterforms such as the insular r and long s, which give the script its unique character. You may also see dots above certain letters. These are called poncanna séimhithe, and indicate a softened sound; a feature now usually written with the letter ‘h’ in modern Irish. Seanchló was used in Irish books, schools and official publications for centuries and remains a beautiful symbol of Ireland's written heritage.
Every photograph in this collection is an original image captured in Ireland by photographer Kristin Gray (Cꞃıſτín Ní ᵹ̇ıolla Rıaḃaıᵹ). Each image is carefully chosen to reflect the mood, meaning or symbolism of its accompanying proverb, bringing together Ireland's landscapes, wildlife and centuries of wisdom.
