The Seanfhocail (shan-uck-ul) are among Ireland's oldest treasures of spoken tradition. Passed from generation to generation, these proverbs capture the wit, wisdom and values of Irish life, often drawing inspiration from nature, family and the changing seasons.

Every photograph in this collection is an original fine art photography image captured in Ireland and is carefully chosen to reflect the mood, meaning or symbolism of its accompanying proverb, bringing together Ireland's lore and landscapes with authentic Irish writing. Each image is framed within its own distinctive shape from ornate circles and Celtic knotwork to the outline of Ireland itself, drawing inspiration from the decorative forms and motifs of Ireland’s illuminated manuscript tradition. In the letterform editions, the script itself becomes the sole subject. Touches of colour are brought to the letterforms as another contemporary echo of Ireland's illuminated manuscript tradition, where both pages and individual letters were once transformed into works of art in their own right. Together, the two collections offer a way of seeing Seanchló not just as a way of writing Irish, but as part of Ireland's visual heritage in its own right.

Each artwork is accompanied by a beautifully designed heritage booklet, inviting you to discover the Seanchló  font, the modern spelling, the literal translation and the deeper meaning behind the Seanfhocail. Alongside the familiar alphabet, you may notice distinctive letterforms such as the insular r and long s, which give the script its unique character. You may also see dots above certain letters. These are called poncanna séimhithe, and indicate a softened sound; a feature now usually written with the letter ‘h’ in modern Irish. Seanchló was used in Irish books, schools and official publications for centuries and remains a beautiful symbol of Ireland's written heritage.
